Repost: @msamandasgrade2 Our explorers went on an expedition to the mangroves between CIS and Camana Bay as part of our plant unit. They were guided through the mangroves with Ms. Cathy from The Cayman Islands National Trust, Ms. Cassie from the Mangrove Action Project, and CIS student leaders from Protect Our Future. The children put their conceptual understandings into practice as they identified red, black, and white mangroves. They also learned about the importance of mangrove conservation to the sustainability of our island’s ecosystem. The students worked together to make observations about the mangrove forest including visible human impacts, and the different flora and fauna. Cayman’s Central Mangrove Forest covers 8,500 acres and is the largest remaining continuous mangrove forest in the Caribbean. 🌱❤️ An ocean of gratitude to our community partners @mangroverangersky @nationaltrustcayman @mangroveactionproject @doecayman @protectourfuture.eco

Whilst Cayman is a small country, it is easy to see the change from the effects of plastic pollution on the beaches and the dump. With the development of Cayman, we have seen the negative impact it has had on not only our environment but also our heritage. One of our ideas to take another step forward is decreasing the use of plastic bags by introducing reusable bags made of silver thatch lining and recycled cloth.
